City Parking

The following letter was sent to the City of Stockton Central Parking District, the directors of the Stockton Downtown Alliance, and a slew of Downtown business: (I'll probably send it through the email webforms for the Mayor and the members of the city council too.)

My girlfriend and I were about to pull into the city parking next to Bradley’s downtown (Ed Coy Garage); when the parking lot attendant stopped us in the middle of the street (we were right behind another car he had stopped), asking what time we were going to leave. By no means was he polite about it, it was literally: “What time you leavin’?” Since I was going to a bar, I answered: “I have no idea.” I looked at the entrance to the lot, and noticed someone sitting in an office chair, directly in the center of the entranceway. The attendant responded: “Well I ain’t lettin’ you in then.”

He explained that he didn’t want to be there ‘all night’. I asked what time he was planning on leaving, and he said 12:30 or 1:00. When I said okay, the car in front of me went forward away from the lot (I can only assume that driver was denied access to the parking lot as well), and I asked the parking lot attendant if he was going to let me in the parking lot. He responded: “Nope!” I asked one last time if he was sure he wanted to deny my entrance, and he affirmed. I pulled away to find a parking spot on Weber Ave., just around the corner from the lot.

I am utterly appalled this attendant can pick and choose whom he’ll allow entrance to the lot, and to close the lot at his whim. He was incredibly rude exhorting his pseudo-authority on the general public, and I’m surprised he didn’t provoke a physical altercation from less controlled drivers.

Downtown Stockton is a great place to go now, even at night. That’s a huge step in the right direction for the city. One bad attitude, especially one coming from a person wearing the City’s logo on his shirt, can turn that around pretty quickly.

You killed my comment. How disappointing. I did mention the joy I felt that bureaucracy was getting it right, didn't I?
'Cause I did feel that. I didn't mean for it to be just a [her] thing. Sorry.
Cheers.
