Armed Reception
Wednesday, July 5, 2006 I was a little late to the office this morning, and I got a hell of a reception for it. I got to the office without event, but when the elevator door opened to take me to my floor, I found inside the elevator our Facilities Manager, a coworker, and a Sheriff’s Officer holding a scoped rifle. I was urged to come into the elevator, even though they weren’t coming out. Sheepishly, I went into the elevator, directly in front of the officer, and pressed my desired floor. Just because he was in uniform, doesn’t mean I’m not going to be on my guard. There is a guy behind me with a gun. (Behind with respect to position in the elevator, I certainly wasn’t going to have my back to him.)
Upon closer inspection, I noticed it was .22, so I guessed it didn’t belong to the officer, which means it was confiscated. Did somebody come to work with a gun?
Yep, that’s just what happened. Someone had brought a gun to work, to let a coworker borrow it. Someone in one of the other companies in this building saw someone carrying a gun get onto the elevator, and called the police. I missed most of the police response. I was told even the SWAT team showed up. Truth be told, I’m glad there was that kind of response.
